Sciatica Relief in Santa Rosa
Sciatica from a nerve pinched in the low back:
For people suffering from sciatica pain. The best treatment for this while avoiding surgery is non-surgical spinal decompression using the Axiom DRX9000. In Santa Rosa and the surrounding areas, the only office that has this is 5th Street Spine. 5th Street Spine is directed by Dr. Brian Thalhamer. Dr. Thalhamer will take you in for a complimentary consultation to see if the decompression treatment is appropriate for you. If you are a candidate for treatment, he will provide an examination, review your MRI or X-rays, and provide a care plan.

Sclerotogenous Pain Referral
What you may be calling "sciatica" may not be involving the sciatic nerve at all. Sometimes irritation to the muscles of the low back can cause what is called a sclerotogenous pain referral.
In the 1950's a group of researchers headed by Feinstein conducted some studies on some medical students. They injected their spinal muscles with a hypertonic salene solution and mapped out where they felt the pain. Below are some examples of the pain referral patterns:

These show the sclerotogenous pain referral patterns that manifest when the muscles and joints of the spine are irritated. The above is the segmental levels of L1 and L2, and they demonstrate how the pain can radiate into the groin and the front of the thigh.

The above is L3 through L4, still radiating to the front of the thigh, ending at the knee.

As irritation is located lower in the lumbar spine and the sacroiliac joints, pain is felt in the buttocks, the back of the thigh, and the outer lower leg. This can feel like the course of the sciatic nerve, but in fact, the sciatic nerve may not be involved at all.
Sometimes, sciatica is indeed caused by nerve irritation. As the lumbar nerve root exits the spine, irritation can cause there to be a disconcerting leg pain traveling down the buttocks and the thigh. Spinal Decompression from 5th Street Spine may help. Either way, we can differentially diagnose where the leg pain is coming from for the most effective treatment choices.
